Background
Le Cheile was founded in 2011 and was previously known as Toronto Camogie Club. It was the first camogie club in Toronto. Le Cheile compete every year at the North American Championships in the States. The Club won the Senior Camogie title at its first trip to the competition in 2012. Since 2012, Le Cheile have been very competitive at Senior level and have competed in most of the finals since. In 2014 and 2015, Le Cheile also sent an Intermediate team to the competition, and won the Intermediate Camogie title in 2014. Le Cheile have also travelled to other tournaments in the States, including two trips (and two wins!) at a 7s tournament in New York. In 2016 the club represented Canada in the GAA World Games in Dublin. The team reached the plate final, and had a hard fought game vs the Middle East for 3rd position in the competition. Several girls from the Le Cheile team also featured on the 2019 World Games Panel. Le Cheile also won the Toronto Championship in 2018 and 2019.
Today Le Cheile has over 35 players and takes part in the North Americans each year. To see our full list of achievements, check out our Wall of Fame here. Le Cheile looks forward to celebrating it's 10th anniversary in 2021!
Club Formation
The club came together when Leanne Fitzgerald and a bunch of girls were at a GAA tournament in the States in early summer 2011. On their way back they were chatting about how great it would be to have a camogie team in Toronto. Catsie may have been the only person Leanne knew that played camogie so she called her and decided to form the club. It really just started off in 2011 as an excuse to meet up with friend and meet new people for a puck around.
The first ever training session took place in high park between a bunch of trees because they couldn’t find anywhere else that was free. There was about 12 of them and they didn't have any helmets, just a few hurls and sliotars. It's safe to say... Le Cheile has come along way!
